Kathmandu. The price of goat meat has increased drastically in this year’s Dashain. Traders have increased the price of meat citing floods, landslides, road blockades and problems in transportation.
At present, goat meat is being sold at Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,700 per kg in Kathmandu. Last year, the price of meat was Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,400 per kg. This year, the price of meat has increased by Rs 300 per kg.
According to businessmen, it has become difficult to bring goats from different districts to Kathmandu due to road blockage due to floods and landslides. They say that the price has also increased due to the increase in transportation cost and decrease in supply in the market.
The price of live goat in the goat market has also gone up to Rs 750 to Rs 850 per kg. Last year, the price of live goat was Rs 650 to Rs 700 per kg.
Due to the price hike, the cost of consumers buying meat has increased in Dashain. There is a need for the concerned authorities to monitor effectively to prevent unnatural price hike in the market. Along with goats, the price of chicken meat has also increased in Dashain.
