Kathmandu. The Trump administration has warned Canada that it would be “foolish” to try to win a trade war with the United States. The U. S. imposes 50 per cent tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade talks failed. That’s 5.5 per cent of Canada’s exports to the United States.

Canada has announced that it will impose retaliatory tariffs from September 8. The U. S. Commerce Secretary said it would have a “catastrophic” impact on Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mac Carney has said that Canada will retaliate with US tariffs, saying that “we are under attack”. Canada is set to introduce new tariffs targeting the U. S. steel and dairy industries on Sept. 8.

U. S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Canada would be in a tough time if it got into a trade war with President Donald Trump. ’

The U. S. currently accounts for about 70 percent of Canada’s exports. “We’re excellent trade partners, aren’t we? But when Canada does business with the United States, the U. S. benefits more than it does when it does business with Canada. Duffy said on “Fox News Sunday” talk show.

“I think it’s stupid on their part to think that they’re going to go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the United States,” he said. ’

Canadian Prime Minister Carney has previously been resolute and walked away from the deal “after a deal was not reached” and announced retaliatory tariffs on the United States. This has deepened the gap between long-term allies. Carney referred to the U. S. demands, which he said would have limited Canada’s trade deals with other countries and unacceptable “warnings” about the French language and Quebec culture. ’
