Kathmandu. The Bharatpur Hospital has been compelled to provide post-maternity services by hiring mattresses due to lack of beds. The number of maternity services in the hospital is high from the second week of June to the coming August. The hospital has 111 maternity beds. The post-operative gyne has 23 beds, 23 beds for singing, 10 beds for complicated gyne, 23 post-natal beds, four for maternity admissions, 15 for maternity waiting, five for maternity active, three beds for labor and five beds for birthing unit.

Senior obstetrician and associate professor Dr Ram Prasad Sapkota said the hospital provides 40 to 50 deliveries on a daily basis. Before delivery, the medicine is used only in bed. Before that, he was forced to put it on a mattress on the floor to wait for his turn.

Bharatpur Hospital is the first choice of those seeking maternity services from Chitwan and neighboring districts. Bharatpur Hospital is the preferred choice of pregnant women due to experienced nursing services, specialist doctors and pediatric intensive care unit.

“In other seasons, the number of people coming for delivery is less so it is difficult to get beds easily,” said the hospital spokesperson. He said that it is difficult to arrange beds only for this time, so it is difficult for pregnant women to get easy facilities. According to senior gynecologist Sapkota, people who are out of their homes come home to celebrate Dashain and Tihar festivals in the months of September and October. At the same time, pregnant women give birth during this time. For this reason, the number of deliveries may have increased during this time.

The hospital has 10 specialist doctors and 29 trained nursing staff. She said that due to this, it is easier for those who give birth than elsewhere. The hospital also has a 20-bed pediatric intensive care unit and a four-bed kangaroo mother care. The hospital has a five-bed birthing unit where only skilled nurses and midwives can help deliver the newborn. In maternity services, this hospital is considered to be a well-organized and reliable post-maternity hospital.

Spokesperson Dr. Sapkota said 7,853 people received maternity services from the hospital in the last fiscal year. Of them, 4,235 were delivered through normal while 3,540 were delivered through caesarean section, he said. A 70-person baby was taken out using a vacuum and a force-app.

In the last fiscal year, 8,420 mothers had availed maternity services at Bharatpur Hospital. Of them, 3,825 were removed through caesarean section while 4,408 were delivered through normal procedure. A total of 187 mothers were delivered using equipment. Last year, 45 per cent of the surgeries were performed while in the previous fiscal year it was 45.4 per cent. According to him, the percentage of surgeries in the hospital is high as there are many complex types of surgeries.
