Kathmandu. Those affected by the Bhotekoshi floods and living in the holding center have gradually left the holding center and have gradually shifted to temporary shelter.

Holding centers were set up in various places of Nuwakot to keep the residents of four local levels of the district displaced due to the devastating floods on August 26. They have started moving to temporary accommodation as part of the government’s campaign to shorten the stay of the holding center and encourage the affected people to stay in temporary rooms.

After the floods, the government gave priority to rescue and transport them to safer places. After that, emphasis was laid on search and rescue, relief and management of holding centers to keep the affected people safe.

According to the District Administration Office, Nuwakot, holding centers were set up at 12 places in the district on August 28 and 1,290 affected people were kept in eight places. By September 7, the number of holding centers and the number of residents was the highest. On that day, the number of holding centers reached 28 and the number of Basnet affected people reached 2,637.

The number of affected people living in the holding centers has been gradually decreasing in recent times. As of Thursday, the number of holding centers in the district has come down to 16. The number of people living there is 832, according to Chief District Officer Shambhu Prasad Regmi.

According to him, the affected people have started arranging temporary accommodation after leaving the holding center. Immediately after the floods, those rescued by helicopter were provided food and shelter. The search for the missing relatives is ongoing. People have also started going for the last rites as the missing people have not been found. CDO Regmi said that the number is gradually decreasing with the procession.

Bidur Municipality has announced a relief program urging the affected people to stay in a room as it will be more inconvenient for the affected people to stay in the holding center for a long time. Bidur Municipality, which is the most affected in the district, has decided to provide Rs 10,000 monthly as room rent and provide necessary materials as relief.

According to Rajan Shrestha, mayor of Bidur Municipality, the number of people going to the rooms has increased after the decision of the municipality executive to provide food, utensils, cleaning materials and other essentials to those affected people leaving the holding centre.

“They have started living in flood-affected rooms. The number of people coming to receive the package program announced by the municipality is increasing. Mayor Shrestha said, “The federal government has also announced to provide a minimum of Rs 15,000 per family per month. ’

All the three tiers of government have announced various facilities, including the amount of room rent, to facilitate the evacuation of the shelters set up to house the affected people rescued from the risk of floods. With the government’s announcement, the affected people have also started making arrangements for temporary accommodation by leaving the stay of the holding center. The government has adopted a strategy according to their wishes to facilitate the affected people. Preparations are being made to build temporary structures for the affected people who cannot get a room in a suitable place or cannot stay in a room.

The Intensive Urban and Building Construction Project Dhading has collected information about the needs of those who have been displaced from flood-affected areas and are living in holding centers through questionnaires. Preparations are being made to construct temporary accommodation for families who do not want to live in a room or cannot live in such a way.

According to project chief Shashendra Ghimire, 2,027 families living in holding centres in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan have been asked through questionnaires. About 31 per cent of them said they want to live in temporary accommodation to be constructed by the government. Most of the affected people who were displaced in search of a safe place after the Bhotekoshi floods are living in Nuwakot. They have been saying that they will be able to live in Nuwakot if the government builds temporary structures as they do not have safe land in their name.
