Kathmandu. Until a few days ago, the city police of Kathmandu Metropolitan City were regularly deployed on the roads to control the encroachment of footpaths in New Road and other areas. The metropolis had imposed strict restrictions on setting up shops on the pavement during the afternoon and also set a fixed time for business.
However, after the incident related to Ganesh Nepali, who attempted self-immolation and later died, the presence of city police on the streets has significantly decreased.
A city police officer said he had been out of regular road duty for some time due to concerns that the incident could lead to an attack on city police or an increased security risk.Footpaths in various places including New Road and have started filling up again after the city police started to see less on the road.
Unmanaged parking on the roads has also increased in Kathmandu. Pedestrians have been forced to walk on the road due to the increase in business on the footpath. According to locals, this has affected vehicular movement and increased traffic jam. See
