अर्थ सरोकार

. Sharada Devi Bista of Bedkot Municipality-8 of Kanchanpur has been working as a health volunteer since 1998. She used to get Rs 75 as transportation expenses when she started the service.

It has been 28 years since Bista has been working as a volunteer after completing a 15-day training with the spirit of ‘Service is Religion’.

She is happy that the government recently addressed women health volunteers in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Bista said she was happy with the 50 per cent increase in the amount of Rs 4

00 she was currently receiving for the meeting. “Even in the past, we have not come to this service looking for money. “Our main goal is to serve, this decision has encouraged us,” she said. ’

Another female health volunteer, Saraswati Devi Karki, said that the increase in transportation cost has encouraged her to work.

“In the absence of a bicycle, it costs more to reach the place where I am called. Although the remuneration is not high, the respect for female health volunteers in the society is different. “This decision will further contribute to that,” she said. ’

The health volunteers receive Rs 10,

000 annually as uniform allowance from the state, Rs 12,000 from the Sudurpaschim provincial government and Rs 15,000 from Bedkot municipality.

“The government not only increased the transportation cost, but also increased the salary and allowances for thousands of volunteers like us who have been serving the village.” This would provide some relief in the current inflationary situation. “Many people remember us and seek advice when we are sick, pregnant women and general health problems,” said Karki. ’

There are seven health volunteers in Bedkot Municipality-8 where they are involved in various works from the health unit to the ward.

Health volunteer Sarita Bista said that she has been providing service since 2060 BS and still has been playing the role of many people in primary health care as well as various public awareness programs.

Although the work of health volunteers has decreased after the operation of basic health units in the ward, there is still public confidence in the work of first aid and public awareness. “Even now, locals come to the village to buy medical supplies like Jeevan Jal, zinc and condoms,” he said. ’

Other health volunteers have said that after reaching the age of 60, they should be honored with a proper package from the state when they go on health retirement. “We are not doctors, but the villagers still come to us with high expectations. We dedicate our lives to civil service, but there is no security for the future. The government should also think about this. “, they say.
